I’m delighted to be chairing the Liberal Reform fringe meeting on civil liberties this lunchtime with a stellar line-up of Liberty director Shami Chakrabarti, Ming Campbell and campaigning journalist John Kampfner. Details as below:
Holding their feet to the fire: civil liberties under the coalition
Tuesday September 25, 2012 1:00pm – 2:15pm @ Hilton Metropole:Durham Gallery
Though we might once have thought the Lib Dems and Tories could be united in government on this issue of personal freedom, the reality has been somewhat different with tensions emerging over
- the internet snoopers’ charter (Draft Communications Data Bill)
- ‘secret courts’, the subject of debate this afternoon at conference
- the Tories’ dislike of the Human Rights Act, and
- the lop-sided extradition treaty between the UK and US.
They’re chunky issues which get to the heart of what it means to be a liberal, so it should be a terrific event.
