LDV readers say: BNP members should be able to be teachers

by Stephen Tall on July 5, 2009

Cast your minds back a couple of weeks, and there was a bout of speculation that Labour, under pressure from the NAS/UWT teaching union, is considering a possible ban on British National Party members working as teachers in schools. We asked LDV readers the question: Do you think there should be a change to teachers’ contracts to prevent BNP members from teaching?

Here’s what yout told us:

  • 27% (92 votes) – Yes

  • 69% (235) – No
  • 4% (12) – Other
Total Votes: 339 Poll ran: 22nd June 2 July 2009
  • Don’t forget, our new poll – asking if you support Lynne Featherstone’s campaign to make job applications anonymous – is still live: your electronic ballot paper is in LDV’s right-hand column.

My reasoning for supporting the union’s proposal is that the BNP is different from a usual political party in that it endorses racism. Inciting racial hatred is a crime in this country, therefore by employing someone who is a paid up member of a party which endorses racial discrimination it would then open the door for other candidates who break the law or are perceived to be breaking the law…teaching is a job where this is a very serious issue. Perhaps if the job in question was to collect rubbish it wouldn’t be so important…the laws of recruitment are tightening up for those working with children, and rightly so…

To Jo I would ask if you ban BNP workers, in your eyes its OK for child molesters to work in schools as long as they are non members of the BNP. I think you will find there are gaping holes in your reasoning. By the way tge BNP are a legally elected party.

They may be a legally elected party but their politicians are criminals. No, quite obviously as anyone will be able to determine from my above comment, no I would not advocate membership of the BNP becoming more important than a criminal record when recruiting teachers.
