Tim Farron’s Channel 4 interview: 2 quick thoughts

by Stephen Tall on July 17, 2015

New Lib Dem leader Tim Farron was asked on tonight’s Channel 4 News whether he thought, as a Christian, that homosexuality is a sin.

It’s not the car-crash some of his critics claim — but there’s no denying Tim squirms and ends up looking evasive.

There are two separate issues here.

1) Does Tim need a sharper response? Yes. “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone” may be a good place to start.

2) Does Tim’s actual view matter? No. I guess if pushed I’d say adultery is a sin (not my kinda language, but still). Does that mean I’m going to legislate to make adulterers less equal? Of course not.

Personal views on morality are just that. And as a Lib Dem who believes in the rights of minorities and non-conformity I’ve no problems defending Tim’s right to hold a view I don’t share.
