Janan Ganesh is an intelligent guy so I’ll just assume this tweet was an aberration

Janan Ganesh — ex-Economist writer, current FT columnist, frequently intelligent political commentator — tweeted thus this afternoon:
SDP in 1983. Greens in 1989. Ukip now. Some people always think politics is on the lip of a grand realignment. It almost never is.

Here’s how I replied:
.@jananganesh which is why we now have our first post-war coalition government and the SNP run Scotland. Hmm.

For a more in-depth dissection of why Janan was talking tosh, here’s my post from last summer: How Jeremy Thorpe (and then Nick Clegg) broke the electoral system

In addition… Who would have predicted the Labour Party’s total realignment to a business-friendly, centrist party as a (slow) reaction to the Thatcher governments and the general domination of neo-liberal capitalism? Or the death of an actual left-right divide in mainstream politics?
Or the end of Northern Ireland hostilities?
I’ve grown bored of Ganesh’s philosophy-lite remarks. Perhaps his day cravats are a little too tight restricting blood flow to the brain.
