Many congratulations to Layla Moran, last night selected as the Lib Dems’ prospective parliamentary candidate for Oxford West & Abingdon — the ultra-marginal seat won by the Lib Dems’ Evan Harris in 1997 which was lost to the Conservatives at the last election by just 176 votes.
Evan — who of course remains actively involved within the Lib Dems not least on its Federal Policy Committee, in addition to his campaigning role for Hacked Off — decided not to seek re-selection. He was very personally targeted by an unpleasant campaign conducted by Lynda Rose, which recycled tabloid smears against Evan, including the label ‘Dr Death’.
Here’s how Neil Fawcett announced the news on Twitter last night:
Congratulations to the excellent @laylamoran who has been selected as our new Lib Dem candidate for Oxford West + Abingdon

Layla took part in the Lib Dems’ leadership programme and wrote about it on LibDemVoice here. Many in the party will recognise her as one of the stars of this autumn’s conference rally, where she spoke about the impact of the pupil premium from her perspective as a teacher.
Best of luck for 2015, Layla!
