by Stephen Tall on September 25, 2012

I’m delighted to be chairing the Liberal Reform fringe meeting on civil liberties this lunchtime with a stellar line-up of Liberty director Shami Chakrabarti, Ming Campbell and campaigning journalist John Kampfner. Details as below: Holding their feet to the fire: (…)

The Lib Dem Conference That Didn’t Bark

by Stephen Tall on September 25, 2012

On the face of it this has been a pretty tepid, even dull, Lib Dem conference. No rows, cock-ups, or defeats. But it’s probably been the most important party gathering since the special conference in May 2010 when the party dipped its hand in blood to sign the Coalition Agreement.

Paddy on the Coalition, joining the party & that Sun headline

by Stephen Tall on September 25, 2012

There’s a fantastic interview with Paddy Ashdown by The Guardian’s Simon Hattenstone published here. As you’d expect it’s crammed full of anecdotes and quotable bon mots. I’ve picked out just three to enjoy… Paddy on the Coalition He regards those who feel betrayed by the party as weak or naive – notably Guardian leader writers […]

So I’ve charted higher than Ming or Nick, I see

by Stephen Tall on September 25, 2012

The Telegraph has published its annual list of Top 50 influential Lib Dems, compiled by Iain Dale and Brian Brivati. I’m a new entry at number 41, charting higher than Ming Campbell or indeed Nick Clegg’s ‘So Sorry’ video. It’s (…)

LDVideo: Nick Clegg Entschuldigt Sich

by Stephen Tall on September 24, 2012

I suspect Nick Clegg may well have had enough of spoof videos by now. But on the off-chance he hasn’t, LBC’s Iain Dale has re-worked that famous clip from Downfall… almost affectionately, I think. Judge for yourselves: Nick Clegg Entschuldigt Sich from Iain Dale on Vimeo. * Stephen Tall is Co-Editor of Liberal Democrat Voice, […]

Andrew Mitchell’s failed apology: what he should have said

by Stephen Tall on September 24, 2012

‘Andrew Mitchell: what an idiot.’ That seems to be the consensus from Lib Dems in Brighton. Partly it’s borne of frustration that his self-admitted outburst against the police is distracting attention away from the party conference. Unfortunately, ‘Tory cabinet minister calls police effing plebs’ is a lot more interesting than policy news about schools funding […]

What should the Liberal Democrats focus on in the next year? (Stephen Tall)

by Stephen Tall on September 24, 2012

That was the question House Magazine asked me for its Lib Dem Conference Special Edition, and here’s what I told them: Forget Nick Clegg’s leadership. There is one issue and one issue alone that the Lib Dems need to focus on in the year ahead: the economy. There are many reasons for the party’s dip […]
