This is very welcome. Will the Government therefore to institute a travel ban on all the names on the Kasparov List, as Mikhail Khodorkovsky requested today? (I translated Russian newspaper Vedomosti’s report here: http://christianmackintosh.com/blog/2012/05/khodorkovsky-proposes-travel-ban-or-russian-officials-to-the-olympics-in-london/ )

There is a superfluous “to” in my above comment. Please disregard it. 😉

Yeh, sound good…BUT…

Two thoughts…
1. Why did he keep referring to the IOC? It seems to me he was leaving himself a get out. If the IOC tell the gov “sorry he/she is the accredited (insert position here) of the Syrian team, you have to let him in”, do they have the spine to say “no!”? I doubt it. Also its basically empty rhetoric anyway…no one’s been convicted (or even charged) with human rights abuses (yet – we have to hope) so what criteria could the gov use to decide who to ban? Or are he and Cameron really so stupid to believe that there is a “good” side and a “bad” side and everything the rebels claim is true and everthing from the regime is a lie? You have to have some sort of due process here…whatever our own personal feelings about what is going on!

2. Will Clegg be taking the same stand against other countries who regularly abuse human rights…how about Russia? Or China? Or most (all?) Muslim countries? I mean surely Nick wouldn’t be doing a bit of populist, pointless posturing, would he?
