Clegg leadership donor is new key player at London Evening Standard

by Stephen Tall on January 21, 2009

With a big tip of the hat to the Guido Fawkes’ blog, there is an intriguing Lib Dem connection to the new owner of the Evening Standard, ex-KGB officer Alexander Lebedev:

Lebedev’s consigliere, Justin Byam Shaw, will become deputy chairman. The wheeler dealer is fondly known as Justin Byem Sellem and is presumably a supporter of the LibDems since Guido understands he donated money to Nick Clegg’s leadership campaign.

A later update confirms the story:

Nick Clegg’s office have been in touch to say Justin Byam Shaw gave £3,000 to Clegg’s leadership campaign and it is on the Electoral Register.

Does this mean we’ll start getting some coverage in the Evening Standard then?

Or does it mean that the Lib Dems are a KGB 5th column intending to take over the UK media?

I’d be happy to increase my party subscription in return for leadership campaigns where all sides are equally funded, and there’s no suspicion you have an advantage if you stand for whatever it is that rich oligarchs feel it’s worth paying you for.
