Who do you think's the best political journalist in Britain?

by Stephen Tall on November 19, 2008

That’s the question Total Politics put to journalists, MPs and the magazine’s Facebook fans – and below, courtesy of The Guardian’s Politics Blog, are the top 20.

As ever with such lists, there are some curiosities – for example, that neither Andrew Neill nor Matthew D’Ancona make it into the premiership. And, personally, I’m a fan of Philip Stephens in the FT. Who do you think’s missing, or been over-promoted?

1. Evan Davis
2. Jeremy Paxman
3. Matthew Parris
4. Nick Robinson
5. John Humphrys
6. Martha Kearney
7. Andrew Marr
8. Andrew Rawnsley
9. Trevor Kavanagh
10. Peter Riddell
11. Quentin Letts
12. Polly Toynbee
13. Adam Boulton
14. Simon Hoggart
15. David Dimbleby
16. Michael White
17. Gavin Esler
18. Simon Walters
19. Jonathan Dimbleby
20. Jeremy Vine

What nonesense. Evan Davis, excellent though he is, is not a political journalist, and neither is Jeremy Vine.

Gavin Esler should not feature in the list, and Martha Kearny should be much lower than she is.

Andrew Neill should be top.

Andrew Neil? please, no. Trevor Kavanagh is also awful.

Andrew Neil is a bumbling, arrogant prick who rightly is not on this list. As for Jeremy Paxman, ‘hubristic’ comes close to properly describing him but I can think of many other words…John Humphrys, how long have you got?

Marthan Kearney deserves her place. I would also have liked to see Eddie Mair, who actually listens to his interviewees, and Kirsty Wark who, despite being professionally Scottish and a fully paid up member of the Tartan Mafia, is a very good interviewer and head and shoulders above the abysmal Paxman.

Jeremy Vine would get a mention if his terrible Radio 2 programme could be forgotten.

Oh Gods not Quentin Twat… Martha should be higher, and Kirsty Wark and Eddie Mair should be on there, yes.

Am glad to see Evan at the top. He’s grand on the Today Programme.
